How to impress coaches and recruiters

How to impress coaches and recruiters

March 10th at the Maribyrnong Seconday College was buzzing with nerves and excitement with over six hundred athletes from 12 TAC clubs taking part in the TAC Cup testing day.

The boys were put through their paces, undergoing the same testing that some of them will be lucky enough to participate in at the NAB AFL Draft Combine later this year, so this was a great way for them to practice their techniques.

DraftStar ran all of the testing on the day, giving club coaches and players the opportunity to measure themselves against other athletes and focus on their weaknesses.

There were some impressive results throughout the day - a 16.9 beep test run by Daniel Jackson from Gippsland Power and a 7.86 on the agility test from Lachlan Whitfield, both players will be under scrutiny from now on! Not only were the players trying to impress their respective coaches, but also a number of AFL recruiters were on hand to see the aspiring stars of tomorrow.

Although the test results were of huge importance, the major focus on the day was how to participate in each activity and the best techniques to use. As many of the athletes hadn't been exposed to AFL Combine testing before, it was important to make sure they understood the correct way to complete each test and the DraftStar team ran the athletes through the best way to achieve their best result and stay within AFL Combine protocols, giving them an advantage at the NAB AFL Draft Combine at the end of the year.

One of the main focuses of the day was the technique involved agility test; this test was developed based on the movements involved with AFL football and is specific to the NAB AFL Draft Combine. By simply completing and being exposed to what’s required in the agility test has given these athletes a distinct advantage over those who have never done or seen it before. The testing is also conducted at the DraftStar camps, run every school holidays.

TAC Cup Testing Day was a huge learning step in the development of the young athletes - by completing AFL testing, learning what it takes to excel in these tests and impress their coaches and the AFL recruiters, they have taken a step towards having a successful season and their AFL dream.
